The Board of Directors met regularly during the summer and has a great season planned.
Brand new this season are Friday Trivia Nights. The first Trivia Night is scheduled for Friday Oct. 6th. Stay tuned for details!
The curling season begins with free curling clinics (lessons) from Oct 10th to 13th at 6 pm. Instructors will be available to help new curlers during each of these stand-alone clinics. Call the club for more information and to sign up for a clinic. Also, please spread the word about these clinics to people who might want to try curling!
Next is the Pepsi Open Bonspiel from October 17th to 21st, including the President’s reception and a dance on October 21st. New curlers: Come try curling! Returning curlers: Warm up those curling skills! Sign-up sheets for the Pepsi Open will be posted in the club on Oct. 2nd. The Pepsi Open is followed by regular season curling, which includes league curling, golden age curling, and alpha/junior curling. New curlers are welcome in all programs!
Here’s some information about each of these:
New curlers are welcome in all leagues.
Monday Night: Nova Scotia Power Single Entry League
This is a recreational (social!) curling evening. Sign up as an individual and you’ll be placed on a team.
Tuesday Night There are two leagues:
The Curling Store Team Entry League
This league has a more competitive spirit, but is also fun! Sign up as a team of four. If you’d like to play, but don’t have a team, then put your name and phone number near the sign-up sheet, as there may be teams looking for a curler to complete the team.
New Curler League
This is a new, recreational (social!) league for curlers who have been curling for 3 years or less. More information will be provided when you sign up for the league.
Wednesday Night: Ziggy’s Skip/Mate League
This is a recreational (social!) curling evening. You can either sign up as a pair (to play skip and mate on a team), or individually. You’ll be placed on a team.
Thursday Night: Doubles League
This is a recreational (social!) curling evening. Sign up as a team of two, or sign up as an individual and you’ll be placed on a team.
League curling starts Oct. 23rd: Sign-up sheets will be posted in the club on Oct 2nd. If you want to play in one of the above leagues, but you can’t commit to play regularly, then please sign up as a spare. There’s a spare signup sheet for each evening league. If a curler won’t be able to make it one evening, then he/she will call people on the spare list. As a spare, you’ll definitely pick up some games.
Saturday Afternoon: Drop-In League
The drop-in league returns on a new day. If a member wants to play, he/she arrives at the club at the set time (to be announced). Teams will be made up on the spot and then everyone will head onto the ice for a game. So, unlike our evening curling format, you might play with different people each week. Also, unlike evening league curling, you could play in the drop-in league without committing to playing every week. Drop-in curling starts Oct. 7th, provided the ice is ready. Note that the drop-in league may be pre-empted occasionally; any schedule changes will be announced in advance.
Golden Age Curling
Golden Age curling takes place Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 1 pm, and is open to those 60 years and over. The present start date is Monday, Oct. 16th. For more information, please contact the club or Don Rushton at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Alpha (7 – 11 years) and Junior (12 – 20 years) curling takes place Monday and Wednesday after school. The present start date is Monday, Oct. 23rd. For more information, please contact the club or Yvon LeFort at email@example.com.
In addition to ongoing curling, we have a number of events planned. In November, we’ll offer a skill building clinic for new and second year curlers. Instructors will work with curlers to develop particular skills. The club offered one skill-building clinic in each of the last two curling seasons. This season we’re expanding the program by offering two skill building clinics: One in November and one in January. Sign up sheets for the November skill building clinic will be posted in October. Stay tuned for details.
In December, there will be club championships, to determine which men’s team and which women’s team represent the Sydney Curling Club at the 2018 Nova Scotia Travelers Club Championships. Stay tuned for more information. December also features the Turkey Spiel and Boxing Day Jazz.
The second half begins with free curling clinics and the New Year’s Open Bonspiel. The second half also features two youth bonspiels, Super Bowl Sunday, the Battle of the Sexes, the Coors Light Spiel, and the Closing Spiel. I am pleased to report that the Sydney Curling Club will host the 2018 Nova Scotia Travelers Men’s Club Championship in March. Watch for volunteer opportunities for timers, ice prep, and more! Training will be provided.
Returning members: You could win a one-season Sydney Curling Club membership for yourself by successfully recruiting a new curling member. If a new curling member is successfully recruited by a returning member, then the new member indicates the name of the returning member who recruited him/her on the new member’s membership form. Each time a returning member successfully recruits a new curling member, the returning member’s name will be entered into a draw for a one-season membership for him/herself.
